Dad Memories: The Lyrical Prankster

The Lyrical Prankster

My father enjoyed to mess with me as a child. And as an adolescent. And as a young adult. And he was good, because I wasn’t all that stupid. Every time I grew wise to his ways, he’d reach a new level of straight-faced Kool-Aid that I would once again drink. He got a lot of practice at Markley Billiards, where he and his buddies would mess with the unsuspecting newbies. Whenever a new guy would come in and start eyeing up a stick with his left hand, my dad would tell him that the left-handed sticks had a red dot on the bottom. He would then watch as this poor kid would roam the room looking for a red dot that didn’t exist. I’m not exactly sure how that bit ended.

Well, here’s one that he probably didn’t realize would have the staying power that it did and I really hope it comes across in print like it does when I tell it. I was in the passenger seat of the car on my way down to UMBC for freshman orientation, excited and nervous. This would be the longest time I would be away from my dad ever. We talked all the way down. He gave me advice, we said our goodbyes and we laughed a lot. We noticed a sign that said “No Hazmats in tunnel” on the way down. He asked if I had packed any Hazmats. I don’t know. We had no idea what a Hazmat was. We half expected to be stopped at the tunnel and to have some security officer to pull his gun on us and ask us to take the Hazmat out of the car. I now know what they are and how stupid we both were.

But about halfway down, we saw a sign and he just shouted out “Havre De Grace!” But he pronounced Hav-re as if it rhymed with Ben Stiller’s pronunciation of Fav-re from Something about Mary. And Grace rhymed with Bocce. De was pronounced like day. Now say it altogether to yourself. Havre de Grace (Lava Day Bocce). He just shouted it out loud and when I looked at him like he was full of shit again, he just told me it was Italian. Well, dad was half Italian and a lot more knowledgeable than I about such things. Besides, he had upped his straight man game something fierce. And since this was the first time I had seen it and it seldom came up about an hour south of there, I lived with that pronunciation of it long into my junior year.

Finally, the day came when this happened. I believe I saw a news reporter say something about Harve de Grace and pronounced it so unprofessionally lazy. The way he said it rhymed with the actual pronunciation of Favre with the words Duh Grace after them. Harve de Grace. I was floored at how sloppy this reporter was. Only three syllables, no roll of the tongue, I couldn’t smell marinara sauce in the background when he said it or anything. I brought this up to Barnes, who was in the room with me and about 6 other people. He laughed. No, I’m serious! How can he call himself a journalist?! His laugh reached a different level, likely from pitied approval to an actual real gut laugh. He told me that’s how it was actually pronounced. All this time, they thought I was just being funny when I said it my way and I thought they were just all being lazy when they said it the apparently correct way. I was the inadvertent victim of my father’s long con and in a way, I was voicing his joke to my friends without my knowledge or consent like a puppet unaware he’s a puppet for over two years.

I called my father with a little bit of sarcastic disapproval and told him that it wasn’t pronounced Lava Day Bocce. What? Oh yeah. I had no idea. This is his reconciliation for the lie that made me the fool for two years. What other lies have you been spinning all these years? I still haven’t forgotten about that Santa Claus thing. Still love you though.

Rating Pranks I've Pulled

Pranks I've Pulled

"It's A Very Weird Al Birthday" - There is a Weird Al song called appropriately and simply enough "Happy Birthday" in which the chorus screams "Happy birthday!... Happy birthday to you!" This part is annoying enough in the context of the song. I knew enough about computers at this point in time to cut out the part where they scream "Happy birthday!" and make Geoff's computer play that clip anytime he opened a program, closed a program, minimized a window, maximized a window, or hit an inappropriate keystroke. And this wasn't enough for me. I restructured his three icons for internet explorer, e-mail and word to play the entire song in a somewhat hidden program. I knew Geoff would not only be unable to fix it, but he'd know exactly who did it too. So he came to work, walked in his office, tried some stuff that lasted about 30 seconds and left, saying "Fix it. I'll be back in 15 minutes." Honestly, I don't know why I expected any other reaction. B+

"Geoff Turns 30" - This was year two of the fuck-with-Geoff era. I was not discouraged by his reaction the first time. Although, I did kind of check with Gary before I actually approached him that day. Anyway, I closed the RAC Tuesday night and he opened it on Wednesday (his 30th birthday), so I didn't just confine myself to his office this time. I hung up Happy Birthday and Over the Hill banners at the front desk and taped balloons to the wall leading up to his office. When he entered the main office, I had Tim McGraw's "My Next Thirty Years" blaring at different points in the song from five different computers to make sure he'd hear the chorus at least once before he could get to all of them to turn them off (it was a bonus that he hates country music). Then when he got into his office, there were 100 "over the hill" helium balloons on his ceiling. A day or two later, he opened a drawer of his filing cabinet and two helium balloons came out and hit him in the face. The gift that keeps on giving. He seemed less upset about this one. I think he was really just plotting the revenge he'd get two and a half years later. A-

"The Third South Ultimate Prank" - This was from back in the old dorm days and it was thought out and executed with military precision. The day before we were scheduled to compete in these dorm wars that I had made up, six of us stayed up all night to pull this one off. Brigid and Courtney designed and cut out over 100 footprints in the shape of 3s and Ss. And they actually looked like footprints. Meanwhile, Suzanne, Billy, Kristen and I were cutting out premeasured pieces of fishing wire and filling up pink helium balloons (remember I wore a pink hat back in these days) and writing stuff like "Third South Rules" and "Your Floor Sucks" on them. After tying the fishing wire to the balloons, Suzanne dropped the end to Kristen and Billy, who were waiting outside now, and they'd walk over to me, who was climbing up each of the columns of windows, and I'd tape the wire to the wall just above the first floor window so that eventually all the balloons sat just outside everyone's windows (which didn't open far enough to remove them that way). This took until daylight to finish. And then the six of us, with a floor plan and three exits and feet taped all over our body, synchronized our watches and snuck onto third north's floor to tape the footprints in a fashion as if they had walked all over the floor, up the wall, on the ceiling, and out the far entrance. We accomplished this in 3 minutes at 7am. And then they woke up and we kicked their ass in dorm wars. Man I miss college. Well, you know. A+

"The Icon Trick" - I can only take credit for maybe a tenth of this one because I have friends that are smarter than me. Mike had a computer with very literally 80 plus shortcuts on his desktop. What the hell were all these things? I don't think I even have more than 4 programs I use. Anyway, when he was away, I made a whole lot of shortcuts named "Mike, you have too many shortcuts on your computer" and filled up the other half of his screen with them. This was all I was going to do. Then I got several other ideas from a few computer savvy guys. So I took a screenshot of his computer as it was with the icons on it. Then I set that as his background. So his new background was a picture of his background, but with all the icons on there. So when he deleted the actual shortcuts, the picture of the icons were still there. This is where the gag kinda fell apart. I knew he wouldn't realize what was going on and how long did I want to pretend that I really fucked up his computer? Regardless, it's a pretty easy and funny prank that I'm going to try on the very few people I know who aren't on this list. B

Quote Of the Day 11/30/04

Sev: "We'll be going on mostly class 3 rapids, but there are a couple class 4 rapids on the river."
Me: "How do they determine the classes of rapids?"
Tony: "Number of fatalities."

Dustined

Dustined

I have been outdone. And it doesn't happen often, but this was good. To give a little background, I was officially given celebrity status when I was profiled in the newspaper for basically doing my job. They took a picture of me to go alongside my article. When I got to work Monday morning, there was a picture about 3 feet wide by 4 feet tall of my head taped up to the door. And then I turned the corner. Somebody had plastered my entire wall with at least 200 copies of... well, me. It was the background on my computer, and they had given me a unibrow in one of the pictures. It was quite a sight. Like a very disturbing personal shrine. I half expected there to be a burning pink hat on a plaster model of Steve from Blues Clues in my drawer. So the way it happened apparently was that when I left work Tuesday, Geoff had Anna cut out a bunch of pictures from the newspaper and put them up all over my computer. Well, then Tim and Brian walked in. They didn't stop until it became a fire hazard. It was like two children walking through the gates of Disneyland for the first time. They started copying, cutting, and taping to the wall. They were much more efficient. They enlarged the copy and made about a million of those. Then they e-mailed the newspaper and got them to send a copy of the picture. Then they revived this poster printer in our office, which no one has been able to get to work for 4 months. They wanted to do the whole ceiling too, but Geoff had to stop them and remind them that this was a place of business, however little business actually takes place in it. So props to Geoff, Anna and Matt, but mostly Tim and Brian who spent some long hours while not getting paid to build my shrine...

Quote of the Day 11/29/04

"Somebody pulled a Dustin on Dustin."

-Gary, upon seeing the sight

Revenge is a dish best served naked (or was that cold?).

Playing Around

Playing Around

Well, I've gotten a lot of response to the circle prank. I think I might have all 8 people now. But Stryker and I were talking more about it today, and the plan has gotten more elaborate. We figured that even if our air-tight plan accidentally let one or two people through, traffic would still be backed up for miles. Unless that guy just happened to be some sort of traffic circle vigilante and slowed down enough to let everybody else in. So, with our new amendment, we're going to need 4 more cars. Their job (Stryker and Harris have to be two of them) will be to be the first car in line at all four of the entrances to the circle. They just have to sit at the intersection and beep really loudly and curse at us, but not go anywhere. And no one is to know that they are working in conjunction with us. They also have a second job. When the cops finally do come to get us, they have to distract them with their bitching and complaining long enough for us to make our getaway. It's a tough job, but if anybody can do it, Stryker and Harris can. I say we do it during finals week about half an hour before an exam time. That'll put the exclamation point on our prank. And our ticket. My friend said he did something very similar, but it was just him and it was midnight. A cop came up to him and told him that it wasn't really reckless driving, but there was just something wrong with that. So he got a ticket after all for reckless driving. My mom said that in New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania, cars have to yield to traffic coming into the circle. So apparently, somebody has already thought of this. Maybe. Well, either way, if Maryland has to change a state law because of me, I'd be able to die feeling that I accomplished something...

Quote Of the Day 5/13/99

"If you want some help with it..i am in and am up for another ticket."

-Jason (tall vball guy most of you don't know)

I also think every car should have a passenger with a road map unfolded and a compass looking completely frustrated.

Breaking unwritten laws,

Nitsud.

Circular Reasoning

Circular Reasoning

You guys know that traffic circle at one of the entrances to UMBC? For those of you who are out of state, or just plain unaware, there is one. It's not a huge thing like that one near Parliament in England, but it's round and cars go in it. So anyway, Stryker and I were driving home one night and thought it would be a relatively neat idea to get about 8 of our friends, put them in cars, and drive around the circle really slow for about half an hour one day, watching traffic back up for miles. After all, they have to yield to traffic in the circle, which would be us, right? It's a totally awesome idea for a prank! Find me something illegal about that if you can. One day, when I'm really drunk, I'm gonna try to do it myself. I'll let you know how it turns out. Anyway, let me know who's in.

I was telling Tony about this idea of ours, and he really jumped on it. He's in. That's 3. Now we need 5 more. Well, I told him the part about how there's no law against how many times you're actually allowed to go around the circle. This is what he had to say about that...

Quote of the Day 5/10/99

"Yeah, but you know the next day we're gonna come back and there's going to be a sign up there - 'Maximum time in circle: 1 minute.'"

-Toner-Def

But until the cops actually show up, we're gonna have a blast! We'll be in all the papers. And we should plan an escape route. 2 cars should go each one of the 4 directions. Neat idea, me! I just hope I don't get nauseated first.

Driving in circles on purpose,

Dustin Andretti.
