Dad Memories: Cheaters Always Win

Cheaters Always Win

While some folks were getting their college degrees and finding a niche in the workforce, dad was hustling pool and poker toDad and Uncle Mark get his money, and not always honestly. When I came back from a two-week vacation in Myrtle Beach in 2004, I told him that it was the first time since I graduated college in 1998 that I had 2 weeks in a row without work. He retorted “Wow, Dus. I don’t think I worked for two weeks straight since 1998.” Thanks. Rub it in, pop.

My dad admittedly grew up on the other side of the tracks. He told me once reluctantly about a time when he fixed a deck to get some money from people he barely knew. After the cut, he sneezed with one hand and stuck the other hand into his lap to switch the decks in a classic misdirection move. He said it was dangerous and he was really hard up for some money at the time and didn’t speak of it with any pride. I’ve done this many a time in strip poker with varying success. When people are drunk and naked and insecure, nobody really watches the dealer. A little tip for you newbies out there.

But then there was one time that he was happy to tell me about a cheat he pulled. This time there were multiple people in on it and though it was in a game for money, that wasn’t really the point. It wasn’t about the money. It was about the funny.

He was at a buddy’s place playing poker with five other people, including his brother Mark. He and Frankie stacked a deck and planned to get this one guy they wanted to mess with to stay in and throw all his money in on a losing hand. My dad walks in the kitchen, which was just behind Frankie’s chair but off to the side. Just as Frankie says “CUT” and hands the cards over to whoever was cutting, my dad asks where the paper towels are. Frankie takes the deck in his hand and uses that hand to point in the direction of the kitchen. His hand is behind the kitchen door and out of sight for just a moment while he points and that’s when my dad takes his deck and replaces it with this elaborately planned ruse.

What was supposed to happen is that Frankie and this other guy were supposed to be in the hand, with the other guy being the aggressor and Frankie calling and eventually catching a straight flush to beat out this guy’s full house. The two of them followed the script for the most part with one exception. My Uncle Mark was trying to bluff them out. He had been dealt 3-5 and decided to protect his little blind, despite a hefty raise from someone with pocket Ks.

The flop comes up 10-7-K, giving the target of this elaborate scam top trips on the flop. Mark now has K-10-7-5-3 with no chance for a flush. He decides to bluff. Trip Ks raises him and Frankie smooth calls with a straight flush draw and the knowledge that he will get that straight flush draw, thus making it basically a straight flush already.

Mark gets pissed off at the raise and calls. My dad shakes his head and, knowing what Mark has, shoots him a look. I don’t know quite what a look of “Get the hell out of this hand; we’re fucking with this guy over here!” looks like. Apparently neither did Mark.

A 7 hits on the turn. The target now has a full house, as was carefully planned; Frankie has not gotten closer at all, but still has one card (his card) coming; and Mark has the same pair of 7s everyone else has and two cards that probably won’t play. And Mark comes out firing. This betting sequence is no longer coming from a place of strategy, but a place of anger and arrogance. Full House raises and Frankie once again calls. Mark re-raises and offers to show his penis. Again, my dad shoots the same look, but as intense as he feels he can give it without arousing suspicion. Frankie now shoots him the same look. Defensively, Mark shoots a look back that says “I GOT A FUCKING HAND, OK!” Full House and Frankie call.

Frankie’s card hits on the river, the 6 that will complete the 6-7-8-9-10 straight flush. Mr Full House has a hand that could only be beat by the 8-9 of spades OR the remaining two 7s, making it a 2 in 1,980 chance that he’ll lose. Mark’s hand can be beaten or tied by literally every possible hand. His hole cards don’t even play. This is an embarrassment. Finally, he checks to the relief of my father. Full House goes all in and Frankie calls. “This is bullshit!” exclaims Mark and throws his hand into the muck. The target shows his cards and Frankie shows one of the two hands in 1980 that beat Full House. Frankie and my dad start to laugh. Full House stands up and yells out “You fuckers set me up!” But jokingly. Five people erupt in laughter after watching this whole display. There are six people there.

“So this is what you guys do? This is what you guys thinks is funny?! You just fuck with people’s money like that shit?! You can all kiss my f*#%ing ass!” Mark grabbed his jacket off the back of his chair, knocking it over.

“What didja have?” asked my dad, coy as a fish.

“Fuck you.”

After he was gone and the money was returned to everyone but Mark – who now had store credit – Full House asked my dad what they gave him.

“I think we gave him 3-5 off.”

“Wow. Unlucky bastard.”

Protection Is For Winners

Protection Is For Winners

Well, I just had my first funny laptop experience and I think you all will appreciate this. Unfortunately it isn’t about me being an idiot, but quite the opposite. It’s nice to have one of those stories once in a while.

So I was playing internet poker tonight. And this afternoon. And all yesterday. And it’s not really that I’m addicted to gambling so much that I’m addicted to winning and losing money. Anyway, I was about halfway into a tournament and had a decent chip stack when my internet cut out. I suppose that’s what I deserve for stealing my internet signal to begin with. And if you’re the kind of person who has a problem with that, replace the phrase “stealing my internet signal” to “get off your moral high horse and join the rest of the capitalist world, Mr. Holier-Than Thou.”

So yeah, my signal cut out and I had $5 on the line here. I tried reconnecting to a few other signals around the area with no luck. So I figured what the hell? I unplugged my computer, grabbed my keys and jumped in the jeep driving around town looking for an unprotected wireless signal. It didn’t take too long. And so I pulled over and parked and started playing again. Top off the jeep, sitting in my pajamas on the side of the road at about 1am on a Saturday night playing internet poker. No, I’m not addicted at all. These two girls walked by, obviously trashed, and I started to panic. For some reason, I thought I needed an excuse so they didn’t think I was weird (good luck). Nothing came to mind, so I just sat as still as possible and pretended they couldn’t see me. Like a tree. An invisible tree. In a car. With a computer screen illuminating my bark. I know they could and I know they did because they stopped talking and laughing when they walked by. And their heads turned. And then they proceeded to run. And I didn’t recognize them, but I’m sure they recognized my jeep because they probably lived on my block. So when I find out who they were, I’ll be sure to add them to the list of chicks I’ve completely lost my chances with. I’m going to need more paper.

So then I lost my stupid tournament. I’d like to blame the surroundings, but I lose a lot worse than that in the confines of my own frequently stolen frequency. I was talking to Bill last week about our internet situation and how even after Mark moved out from next door, we still had a signal that we could pick up, but I just wanted to make sure that borrowing someone else’s signal was ok with his ethics…

Quote of the Day 7/8/06

“The way I see it, it’s their fault for letting their radio waves go through our house.”

-Indiana Wilcox

If you think about it, it would be rude not to let us use those signals that are pervading their way into my bedroom. Intrusive damn radio waves!

Outkicked

Outkicked

OK, we're gonna take a break from the Alanis Morisette dating life I've been leading for a while (and we won't speak of that sporting event that may or may not have happened a few days ago), and we'll concentrate on my newest addiction, poker. Thankfully, I have a computer that can only support my habit about three hours at a time. This is why I still sleep at night. Once I get a new computer, I will need to find an alternative to sleeping. Anyway, I was recently playing hold em online with my dad and got an ace-four. I told him I didn't want to call because I had an ace with a poor kicker...

Quote of the Day 2/7/05

"That's not a kicker. That's not even a punter."

-The dad.

And that's not the only poker/football joke I got lined up for this week!

Bettin on a loser,

Bugged

Bugged

Here's a quick hit because I'm behind and I don't want to be:

A bug buzzes by Jamie during a poker game. He shoos it away. Several minutes later, it buzzes by again and he swats at it once again...

Quote Of the Day 1/20/05

J-Me: "Damn! It's that same damn bug!"
Dad: "Wow. You must have got a good look at it."

The joke's on us. He gave my dad the finger.

The fly in your Vaseline,

D Rec.

The Birthday Hand

The Birthday Hand

Hello again everybody. Sorry if I scared you all with that last e-mail. This one shouldn't be nearly as long, painful, or interesting. It will be much more convenient for my subscribers that can't read.

Anyway, this e-mail is going to be a blatant attempt to persuade one, two or many of you to come to Vegas with me over Spring Break. I booked a room in the Luxor from Tuesday March 23rd through Friday March 26th. The room can fit four comfortably, but lots more uncomfortably. Probably somewhere around 225 honestly, but that would be pushing the uncomfortable limit. Anyway, right now Joanna and I are going, but if you are getting this e-mail, you're invited. Unless you're that 52-yr-old hooch that my colleague keeps trying to hook me up with. Actually, what the hell? Anyway, I can book a flight tomorrow for $268 round trip and the room is only $420 total for four nights. Plus, I plan on winning at least $500, so the trip should pay for itself. So anybody interested? I already asked a bunch of people and most of my college friends are already going somewhere else or aren't 21 yet. Most of my friends with real jobs don't get a random week off in the middle of March and my unemployed friends can't really afford to go. But that's why you need to win money. Some people just don't understand. So holla back if you want to come along. I'll split my winnings. Or my losings.

So if you don't play Texas Holdem, you might not get this, but trust me, it's funny. My dad was playing in Atlantic City with a friend of his and his friend stayed in on a non-suited 3-6. My dad just kinda shook his head. A few hands later, my dad folded and Billy looked at his first two cards, shook his head, showed the non-suited 3-6 to my dad, and threw his $6 in the pot. After the flop, he once again folded. So my dad turned to him and asked why he kept staying in on a non-suited 3-6...

Quote of the Day 3/8/04

Billy: "It's my daughter's birthday, March 6th. I stay in the pot to at least see the flop."
Dad: "Oh, OK. I got it now. I guess I play my son's birthday too."
Billy: "When's your son's birthday?"
Dad: "January 1st."

Get it? Even if you don't play Holdem, you should at least get it. AH, whatever.

Your 7 card stud,

Moneythroweraway.

Rating Songs About Huge Women's Backsides

Rating Songs About Huge Women's Backsides

Baby Got Back (Sir Mix-a-Lot) - White, black, green, whatever color you are, this song is fuckin funny. It's the apex of lyrical degradation of women before it took a sharp turn into the lyrics of today. Thought actually went into the song to come up with gems like "My anaconda don't want none unless you got buns, hon" and "He had game but he chose to hit em; so I pull up quick to get wit em." Funny stuff. And it's still the best use of a whip in any song. A

Big Bottoms (Spinal Tap) - It still cracks me up that Rob Reiner made this mockumentary about a really stupid crappy rock band, and they manage to sell albums and go on tour and have a following. It's a damn joke! The whole song is a parody, just like the movie, and a good one. "My baby fits me like a flesh tuxedo; i'd like to sink her with my pink torpedo." It's pretty funny, but it ain't Sir-Mix-A-Lot. B

Back That Ass Up (Juvenile) - This is a good example of where rap lyrics have gone. "Youz a big fine woman, won't you back that azz up." The title of the song is really the only thing going for this song. Probably because nobody can understand another damn word the guy says. D

Fat Bottom Girls (Queen) - These guys had to be the inspiration for Spinal Tap. I still can't believe they got away with recording for so many years. This was a real life farse of a music band. This song came out of nowhere too. But nobody blinked because it was Queen. Their name was Queen. Didn't that tell anybody anything? "Left alone with big fat fatty, she was such a naughty lady, big big woman - you made a bad boy out of me." It's not quite Weird Al or Spinal Tap, but it bridges them to the rest of the music world. C-

Doin' Da Butt (Cameo) - This is the one that started it all. One day, everybody was offended when you said they had a big ass. The next day, this song came out on the radio. All of a sudden, it was fashionable to have a lot of junk in the truck. Twiggy was dead and us white kids cried and cried when we realized what had happened years later. I was in middle school and the song kinda scared me because I wasn't very comfortable with girls as it was and I don't know that I liked telling them they had big ole butts. But the best part of the song is just that; that it lended itself to the "banana fanna fo fustin" song theory in that you could put anybody's name in there. "Joey's sister's got a big ole butt, OH YEAH! Ms. Lattanze's got a big ole butt, OH YEAH! Arnold Palmer's got a big ole butt, OH YEAH!" And when you told people they had a big ole butt, it was in the third person, so it wasn't as forcefully degrading. But it didn't matter, because they just said "OH YEAH!" right back at you anyway. This song changed the world. It inadvertently opened the floodgates for streams of horribly degrading lyrics, but we'll forgive it because the beat lends itself so easily to putting one's backfield in motion. A+

I was trying to explain this 9 card poker game to a few freinds of mine to try to get them to play. I think I had a couple of them, but Erick had to go and resist saying that he thought the game sounded made up...

Quote Of the Day 2/11/03

"Well, aren't all games made up?"

-J-Me

Apparently not.
